Dry Creek Petrified Forest, Wyoming

It’s here at Dry Creek Petrified Forest, just east of Buffalo, Wyoming, where you’ll happen onto tree stumps that are as big as four feet in diameter and still sport the growth rings that put the area back to a time when it was a jungle-like swamp. Geologists tell us that millions of years ago, the Dry Creek Forest was very much like the Okefenokee Swamp in Southern Georgia.

The landscape we see today was formed by the mighty uplifting of the Big Horn Mountains that created the prairie ecosystem. There was also the first formations of coal at the same time, and there you have the petrified state of the Dry Creek Forest.

It’s a wonderful walk, with information stations along the way. It’s an educational stroll, that takes you back 60 million years! At Dry Creek Petrified Forest.
