Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

Established in 1893, the Phipps Conservatory is one of the major attractions in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh Pennsylvania travel is incomplete without a visit to this glass and steel greenhouse resembling a Victorian mansion. The Conservatory has been endeavoring to explore the mysteries of various plant species ever since its establishment.

Located in the Schenley Park in Pittsburgh the Phipps Conservatory offers a vast space of greenery. This Conservatory is not only a greenhouse but also an architectural masterpiece, which is flocked by thousands of tourists throughout the year.

Of late, Phipps Conservatory is championing the cause of green building in its advanced stage. It is also strongly advocating sustainable gardening and spreading a new awareness regarding saving the environment.

Phipps Conservatory has a LEED certification of the silver level. It consists of 13 rooms, which display an extensive collection of different species of exotic plants such as bonsai, palm trees, orchids, succulents, and many more.

The names of some of the rooms and gardens belonging to the Conservatory are Stove Room, Palm Court, Tropical Fruit, and Spice Room, Sunken Garden, and Serpentine Room. The gardens are Medicinal Plant Garden, Aquatic Garden, Outdoor Garden, and Discovery Garden.

The Tropical Forest Conservatory at the Phipps Conservatory is set to be decorated based on different themes. It began with the theme of Thailand displaying many plants that are of medicinal, horticultural, and economic value to the natives of Thailand. In 2009 the theme was the ‘Headwaters of Amazon’.

This Conservatory also includes energy-efficient ‘earth tubes’ to cool the environment and a powerful Solid Oxide fuel unit to control the electric supply.

The Conservatory offers programs on sustainable gardening, floral art, and design for both children and adults. Phipps Conservatory remains open throughout the week from 9:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening except for Fridays when it is open till 10 at night. Any Pittsburgh travel package cannot exclude such an amazing tourist spot.
