The Featherly Regional Park on the banks of Santa Ana River was once the favorite swimming hole and picnic spot for local residents and now a rising attraction for visitors on Anaheim travel. The county supervisor Cye Featherly is credited with the idea of converting these idyllic surroundings into what later came to be known as Featherly Regional Park.
The late 60s saw a master plan evolving for Regional parks within the county to cater to the needs of the growing population. Featherly Regional Park became a reality in 1970 with State as well as Federal funds having been acquired for the purpose. For the Orange County this was also the 3rd county park.
Until the late 1970s, the Featherly Regional Park was providing both camping as well as picnic facilities. But, with the Yorba Regional Park coming up within arms distance the picnic facility at the Featherly Regional Park was withdrawn. The Yorba Regional Park is a day facility exclusive for picnics if you plan a short journey to Anaheim.
Santa Ana Canyon
Santa Ana Canyon is home for the Featherly Regional Park and almost the entire area is comprised of riparian wilderness. Access to the public is restricted and the best of viewing opportunities are available from the Bikeway along Santa Ana River which is adjacent.
Canyon R.V. Park
The Canyon R.V. Park within the Featherly Regional Park is the only developed facility and is a privately operated enterprise. In more recent times, even this has fallen into a number of controversies. Some reports even contend that privatization has done great harm to this park and its surroundings. Environmentalists claim that the native vegetation of the park is at great risk.
From a visitor’s point of view the present situation is not encouraging and the upkeep of the park is caught in a vortex. Only time can resolve whether the park can gain its old glory through private initiative or public involvement.
