For a great day trip or weekend with the family this month, head to sunny San Diego where admission to the Zoo, Safari Park, Sea World and LEGOLAND are all free for kids. Yes, you heard right. All FREE for children depending on their age and the attraction.

At the San Diego Zoo, home to 3,700 rare and endangered mammals, birds and reptiles, admission is free for kids ages 11 and under.

It’s the same for the zoo’s sister site, the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where animals roam free in vast expanses designed to mimic their native habitats of Africa and Asia.

At SeaWorld San Diego admission is free for one child, ages 3 to 9, with one full-paid adult admission. The same free admission rules apply for Dine with Shamu. Additionally, kids, ages 10 to 12, can participate for free in SeaWorld’s Dolphin Encounter and Dolphin and Beluga Interaction Programs with one paid adult participation (kids must be at least 48″ tall).

LEGOLAND® California Resort and its companion attraction, the SEA LIFE™ Carlsbad Aquarium, are offering a free one-day Child Hopper Ticket for one kid, ages 12 and under, with purchase of a full-price one-day Adult Hopper Ticket.

Want more? Kids ages 12 and under get in free to 30+ San Diego museums with one paid adult admission. Just print out this coupon from the San Diego Museum Council and your kids can visit places like  the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the U.S.S. Midway and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps for free anytime during their open hours in October. Some museums may have to collect your coupon so print out several to have on hand.

But wait, there’s even more! Check out the list of free- for-kids offers at restaurants, hotels and cruises at the San Diego Visitors and Convention Bureau.  And if you fancy a train trip, kids rides free on the Amtrak Surfliner from as far north as San Luis Obispo to Oceanside, Old Town San Diego or San Diego Downtown. One child ages 2 – 15 ride free with one adult paid ticket reserved at least 3 days in advance.

San Diego's Fleet Science Center is Free for Grandparents and Grandkids September 8

San Diego’s Fleet Science Center is Free for Grandparents and Grandkids September 8

On National Grandparents Day, kids can treat their favorite nana or papa to free admission to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego.

Of course, Grandparents can do the treating, too. The only requirement for the free admission on Sunday, September 8, is that one grandparent be accompanied by one or two grandkids. That’s right, free admission for one grandparent and up to two grandkids. That’s a savings of $23 – $35!

The free admission is sponsored by Scholarshare College Savings Plan, which seems like a perfect pairing to me. The ScholarShare mascot, Diploma Dog, will also make an appearance early in the afternoon to conduct a sing-along for the kids and explore with them what they want to be when they grow up. Each child gets a “diploma” to color in Diploma Dog and to record his or her dream of a future career. How cute is that?

After spending a day at the science center’s eight interactive exhibit galleries, be sure to take a fun photo in the career character cutouts.

The Fleet Science Center will be open 10AM to 6PM on Sunday, September 8. Grandparents and grandchildren can pick up their free exhibit gallery pass at the ticket counter upon arrival. Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the museum and along Park Blvd.
