Free Groundhog Day Fun with Punxsutawney Phil and Foursquare!

January 31, 2013 |  by  |  Holiday  |  No Comments

Free things to do alert: Watch live as celebrity groundhog Punxsutawney Phil makes his annual Feb. 2 Groundhog Day weather prediction, plus earn the 2013 “PA Groundhog Day” Foursquare badge for free!

Every year since 1887, Phil has made his Groundhog Day appearance at Gobbler’s Knob in the Pennsylvania Wilds to predict either 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring. If the sun is out and Phil casts his shadow, we’re in for a second winter. If the skies are cloudy, we’re in for an early spring.

We all can’t be there with him in person, but we can watch the festivities live online! Just click on the live stream. Phil’s Prognostication happens at approximately 7:25 a.m. EST, when he’s brought out of his protective box by tuxedo clad members of the mysterious Inner Circle.
Foursquare Groundhog Day Badge
For more free fun, check-in to Foursquare on Feb. 2 and earn the 2013 “PA Groundhog Day” Foursquare badge! You don’t actually have to be physically in Gobbler’s Knob to earn the badge. Here’s how it works:

1. Follow visitPA on Foursquare by going to foursquare.com/visitpa

2. Check in anywhere in the world and shout “groundhog” between 12:00am – 11:59pm EST on February 2, 2013

If you are lucky enough to check in from Gobbler’s Knob, show your check-in to the attendant at the Groundhog Tent — the first 500 to check-in will receive a free customized Groundhog Day box with a Slinky® inside! Made in Phil’s home state of Pennsylvania, Slinky is the state’s official toy. Slinky® Master Tom James, the son of the toy’s inventor, will be onsite to sign the special boxes.

Free Thing to Do While Waiting for Santa: Watch the Reindeer Cam!

Here’s a fun free thing for the kids to do while waiting for Santa Claus to arrive — watch the Reindeer Cam!

Dubbed Santa’s Official Reindeer Live Feed, you can watch real reindeer prance and hang out at the North Pole while they get ready for their big night out pulling Santa’s sleigh. See Santa feed the reindeer at 11 a.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. As we write this, we’re watching the reindeer snooze at about 4 a.m. EST. Yep, you can even watch the reindeer at night if they’re in camera range.

There’s also a Reindeercam app for the iPhone and iPad for the frugal price of $1.99 so you can watch the reindeer on the go.

Kids who have been nice this year might see their names projected on the reindeer barn wall. How do you get on the nice list? Send a letter to Santa (mailing address provided on the site), write a review of the the Reindeercam app or donate $1 or more to the reindeer fund.

The site also has a micro store with a couple of cute reindeer items at frugal prices. Worth taking a look at.
